Slater’s Funeral Home
helping
families for
more than
100 years
F
or more than 100 years, Slat-
er’s Funeral Home has pro-
vided end-of-life care for Milled-
geville residents and their families.
Founded in 1911 by mortician
Alonzo Slater and run for more
than 50 years by the Griffin family,
since 2017 Slater’s has been over-
seen by new owner Andra Jenkins, but
the service local residents have come to
expect from the business is right where it
has always been.
“Slater’s is definitely a legacy,” says
Jenkins, now approaching his third year
of running the mortuary. “It’s one that
was laid long before me, and has a very
rich history in Baldwin County. It’s not
necessarily about [me] being the new
owner; it has nothing to do with me. I’m
simply the person who has been charged
with its leadership...”
With more than 15 years’ experience
in the funeral business, the Washington
County native knows a great deal about
the needs of local residents when their
loved ones have passed on. Between
pre-death planning, funeral services,
burial and cremation, the home offers a
full complement of end-of-life services
in an easy, stress-free experience for the
bereaved. Outside of celebrating the de-
ceased and their lives, Jenkins says this
rapport with loved ones lies at the heart
of the funeral business.
“Throughout life, we plan all of our
major events: weddings, graduations,
retirements, and other ceremonies,”
says Jenkins. “Death is one of those
things that’s always going to happen,
and it’s incumbent upon all of us at
some point in time... Whatever a fami-
ly’s needs are as they relate to commem-
orating their loved one’s life, we plan to
always go above and beyond to meet
those individual needs.”
