T
he Union-Recorder has delivered the news of the local commu-
nity for two centuries, and for the past 12 years, it has been a
central part of my life.
I’ve been a journalist for nearly 20 years, landing in the news-
paper business still hopeful and green and fresh out of college. I
had some pretty large ambitions and dreams of moving on after a
couple of years to what I considered then bigger and better things.
But something about working at a community paper stuck with me
and I’ve enjoyed the journey thus far.
I’ve laughed. I’ve cried. And I’ve beamed with pride with what
we’re able to produce on what often seems like a shoestring and a
prayer.
I’ve shared personal heartaches and momentous joy surrounded
by folks who, I am assured deep down genuinely care.
I’ve accomplished a lot personally and professionally during my
time in Milledgeville and I’ve grown a lot in both arenas as well, all
the while taking pride in sharing the stories of the local community.
That’s what this publication is all about — celebrating the role
that The Union-Recorder has played in the lives of local people and
the places around us.
We’ve shared difficult stories. We’ve watched history unfold.
We’ve enjoyed laughs together on our best days and mourned
collectively in difficult times.
And we’ve done it all together.
As we mark our 200th this year, we hope you continue this jour-
ney with us. After all, these are your stories, your lives, and this is
your forum. The Union-Recorder is your community newspaper.
I’m grateful each day that I’ve had the chance to spread my
wings here. I’m proud to say that community journalism still feels
like home and that The Union-Recorder is an extension of my
family.
