M
y name is Don Carswell and I was fortu-
nate enough to be a sportswriter for The
Union-Recorder from July of 1987 to July
of 1990. I have great memories of those three years
as it was my first job after graduating from college.
I was fortunate enough to work for a great first
boss in Editor Cecil Bentley. I remember to this day
when Cecil offered me my first “real job”, contingent
on me receiving my degree from Mercer. I did and
so began a three-year journey that brought me into
contact with so many people that have remained
part of my life for over three decades.
The highlights included John Milledge and Bald-
win winning state championships in girls’ basketball
and getting to go Kansas City for the NAIA National
Tournament with the Georgia College Colonials.
Those late nights after football or basketball
games, trying to hit a midnight deadline and put
out a great looking paper with loads of information,
were great preparation for anything I might face.
Those were simpler times and if you haven’t figured
it out, I do miss them from time to time.
