Lake Trahlyta , Lake Winfield Scott in southern Union County

Two lakes in Union County offer beautiful scenery , easy walking areas and splendid areas to enjoy nature . One offers a waterfalls .
Lake Trahlyta and Lake Winfield Scott are less than seven miles apart in southern Union County .
Lake Trahlyta is named for an American Indian woman named Trahlyta , part of the natives known as the Cherokees .
Lake Winfield Scott is named after General Winfield Scott , a 19th-century United States Army general and one time presidential candidate . In 1838 , the Cherokee Indians were removed from the area by General Winfield Scott and forced westward along the Trail of Tears .
Lake Trahlyta is a 22-acre lake which features an easy loop trail , Lake Trahlyta Falls and some of the best scenery anywhere in north Georgia .
The lake , a man-made reservoir in Union County , is located in Vogel State Park .
Vogel is one of the first two original state parks in the state of Georgia .
According to the legend , Trahlyta lived in the north Georgia mountains and drank from a Fountain of Youth to maintain her great beauty .
She was courted by a warrior named Wahsega , but Trahlyta rejected his courtship .
The spurned Indian warrior kidnapped and imprisoned Trahlyta in a location away from her mountain home and the water needed to maintain her beauty . The place Wahsega took her was unknown . Trahlyta longed to see her home again , but her captor did not allow it . She begin to age and her beauty left her .
Trahlytan died . Her dying wish , according to the legend , was to be buried in the mountain forests where she came from . Rocks were piled on her grave . A custom arose among the Indians and later the Whites to

drop stones , one for each passerby , on her grave for good fortune . Today there is a pile of stones at an intersection not far from Vogel State Park .
Vogel State Park was established in 1931 at the base of Blood Mountain , the highest
summit on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia and surrounded by Chattahoochee National Forest .
The area of Vogel is linked to native American Indians before settlers moved in . The names of Blood Mountain and Slaughter
