RISK FACTORS

There is no single cause, risk, or warning sign for suicide. But there are risks and warning signs you can be aware of and look for if you think someone might be suicidal. Take any suicidal talk, action, risk factor or warning sign seriously. It's a cry for help.

Be aware of these common risk factors:

- mental illness

- depression

- alcoholism or drug abuse

- abuse

- previous suicide attempts

- family history of suicide

- family history of abuse or trauma

- terminal illness

- chronic pain

- recent loss

- recent traumatic event

- social isolation

- loneliness

- lack of support network
