Coping With

Self-Harm

Dealing with self-harm can be overwhelming in the moment. That's why it's important to have a plan to cope with self-harm and the emotions that come with it. Try these suggestions to empower yourself so you are prepared next time the urge comes:

Get rid of the instruments you use to self-harm. Throw away anything you use to self-harm, such as razors, needles, etc. Taking those items out of easy access is a good start to making your environment more healthy.

Be emotionally aware. When you feel the urge to self-harm, understand what you are feeling and why in that moment. Pay attention to your feelings instead of numbing them. Identifying your emotions can help you deal with them in a healthy way.

Have a plan. Next time you feel like self-harming, have a plan of action ready. Reach out to trusted friends or family members to talk with, change your environment or do something creative (like The Butterfly Project). Make a list detailing your plan to deal with self-harming more positively and post it where you can see it.
