BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
KPT / JPT ( R2 / 421 / 6 / 0027 ) 10 / 25 - MQA / SWA0129
Study science at Monash and learn from leading experts whose research is shaping the world ’ s future .
This course provides you with a broad science education in your first year , so you can explore your interests before you specialise in one or more areas that inspires you in your second year . This flexibility allows you to explore new areas , further develop your strengths in science , and pursue your interests beyond the area in which you specialise .
Science graduates have diverse and interesting careers . The flexibility of the training and interdisciplinary approach nurtures greater adaptability in our science graduates . Our graduates are scientists , analysts , journalist , environmental advocates , and some are attached to corporate companies as procurement , marketing and corporate personnel .
Get ready for the real world
Build your professional experience with a science-related internship which is offered as an elective unit to Bachelor of Science students . This is a great way to prepare yourself for the demands of the real world .
Leveraging on the industry partnerships across the country and region , we ’ ve worked with multinational companies throughout the years to place our students . Our engagement with non-governmental organisations and environmental advocates through learning activities and placements keeps you abreast of global development such as current global climate change issues and the demand for sustainable practices to protect the world we live in .
Areas of study
Applied microbiology 1 Explore microorganisms such as bacteria , fungi , parasites and viruses , and their application in improving health in areas related to industrial processes , agriculture , medicine , genetic engineering , food and bioremediation . You can prevent food spoilage , stop the spread of infectious diseases , or solve environmental problems by removing pollutants using beneficial microbes .
Biotechnology Utilise biological systems and / or living organisms to develop new technologies and processes of value to the healthcare industry , agricultural and industrial sectors , and the environment .
Genomics and bioinformatics Decipher the total genetic makeup of organisms and the diverse range of analytical methods and tools applied to genomic data . These allied fields contribute to superior healthcare , enhanced food security and more .
Medicinal chemistry Design , develop , and determine the biological activities and properties of drugs . You ’ ll learn how to seek new active chemical compounds from natural products such as rainforest plants , and design novel synthetic compounds .
Psychology 1
Study the human mind , mental processes and resulting behaviour . This is a broad scientific discipline that includes investigations of the brain , memory , perception , reasoning , and mental health and wellbeing .
Tropical environmental biology 1 Study the behaviour of living systems with a strong focus on ecological and environmental issues of global importance such as climate change , biodiversity , sustainability and conservation . You acquire greater awareness of our living earth and help mitigate climate change issues .
Chemistry ( minor ) Explore the science of matter and energy , how atoms and molecules react and interact , and how that behaviour can be harnessed to transform materials , medicine and technology .
Genetics and genomics ( minor ) Study the structure , function , transmission and evolution of genes . Genetics underpins many exciting areas such as biomedical science , conservation biology and forensics .
Monash has a student-centric learning environment where students have learner autonomy and are responsible for their learning path . This active learning approach has helped prepare me for the working world as I have to set my own path to learn and gain the necessary knowledge and to develop my functional competency to fulfil my responsibilities at work .”
