What ' s this course about ?
Geology is the study of the earth beneath our feet – 4.5 billion years of rich and fascinating history . You ’ ll examine the complex natural processes that have shaped our planet ' s evolution through geological time – including tectonics , climate change and natural hazards . By learning how the Earth ' s natural resources were formed , you ' ll develop skills essential to addressing global challenges and transitioning towards a green economy , such as how to tackle climate change , understand global catastrophes and solve declining energy sources .
Example placements
● Structural Soils
● GEA
Example topics
● Mineral resources and exploration
● Structural geology
● Geodynamics
● Mineralogy and petrology
What ' s this course about ?
Are you interested in studying the processes of how life on Earth began , evolved and diversified ? Palaeontology is the study of ancient life , from the earliest algae to the biggest dinosaurs and our first human ancestors . It seeks to uncover the ways in which life on Earth evolved through the ages and , in turn , how this can help us better understand the natural world today .
Example placements
● Civil engineering , mining and quarrying companies
● Dinosaur Isle museum on the Isle of Wight
Example topics
● Biodiversity and vertebrate anatomy
● Early vertebrate evolution
● Dinosaurs and mammals
● Invertebrate and analytical palaeontology
● Oceans , climates and environments
● Professional skills for palaeontologists
|
● Sedimentology and palaeontology
● GIS and remote sensing
Course highlights
● Conduct experiments in our geoscience labs , stocked with industry-standard Leica polarising microscopes , laser ablation geochemistry and electron microscopes , plus rock , mineral and fossil specimens to examine
● Do hands-on fieldwork in world-class geological locations in the UK and France
● Boost your employability with a 1-year work placement in industry
● Tailor your studies to focus on areas of geology that interest you most and complete four weeks of independent fieldwork for your final year project
● Our great industry links provide an opportunity for you to network with and learn from employers from a range of areas , including engineering geology
Course highlights
● Reveal the secrets of ancient life in our petrology and palaeontology laboratories , stocked with rock , mineral and fossil specimens
● Work alongside our active academic research team on the latest palaeontological theories and models , as they integrate new ideas and data into teaching
● Unearth your own discoveries on fieldtrips in locations such as the Isle of Wight , Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site locations Lulworth Cove and Lyme Regis , and other famous fossil localities
Future opportunities
Gain the knowledge and expertise to become a skilled palaeontologist , without any previous experience in palaeontology or geology . When you graduate , you ’ ll have a strong set of transferable skills suitable for a range of scientific roles ,

‘ It ’ s more than just book knowledge I gained studying with Portsmouth . It pushed me to take more opportunities and achieve far higher than I expected , which is an attitude I hope to now take anywhere . ’
Saskia Elliot
Future opportunities
Geologists have a unique and diverse set of skills critical to many modern day environmental issues , including the shift to a low carbon economy . You ' ll be ready for a career in a variety of sectors , including engineering geology and geotechnics , the extractive minerals industry , mining , environmental consultancy , hydrogeology , renewable energies , teaching or research . You could also go on to study at postgraduate level .
‘ There are only a couple of Palaeontology courses within the UK to choose from , but I chose Portsmouth because the curriculum seemed to best match my main areas of interest , and the range and number of field excursions was a major draw . ’
