34 | Your Degree Keele University has always dared to be different when it comes to the courses we offer. Your degree What type of degree should I choose? The University has built an enviable reputation for the wide range of courses offered to students. But too much choice can be a bad thing, so today the modern Keele curriculum offers not only exciting options and combinations with outstanding breadth and depth, but also clarity of choice which will help make your decision making easier. There are two main types of degrees available at Keele. Single Honours Our Single Honours degrees offer you the chance to specialise in one main academic area and to explore this throughout the duration of your course. The course will have a range of modules which may include optional modules but they will all be focused around an academic area. Combined Honours Our Combined Honours programmes give you the opportunity to study two different subjects giving you a wider range of expertise by the end of your course. With some of our Combined Honours courses the two subjects are studied in isolation to each other eg. Biology and Psychology. Other Combined Honours courses involve more integration between the two subjects where there will be elements of both subjects within individual modules eg. law WITH business. If you are considering a Combined Honours degree then take a look at the course pages on our website to see how the modules work for that particular combination. Foundation Year Whether you have non-traditional qualifications; want to change your subjects; have had a break from education and wish to return or want a change of career – the foundation years at Keele provide an opportunity for those with diverse backgrounds to access an honours degree. The programme is an excellent introduction to study at university; most students who complete the foundation year have ultimately obtained a first class or upper second class honours degree. Teaching methods include lectures, laboratory classes, seminars, workshops and tutorials, and you will make use of state-of-the-art undergraduate teaching facilities and apparatus. Assessment is through a wide range of coursework, including independent and group research projects, workbooks, essays and presentations, together with examinations which are held at the end of both semesters. In addition to the University’s support network, you will have a personal tutor whom you see on a regular basis in small group tutorials. Foundation years are available in Business Health, Humanities, Science, Social Science and an International year (for international students). Elective Pathways at Keele Keele University has always been proud to offer a broad and interdisciplinary curriculum: many programmes give room for ‘elective’ choices that allow you to experiment with study beyond your core subject or subjects. From 2020, we offer a set of carefully designed Elective Pathways, allowing undergraduates to follow specialised routes of learning that focus on powerful debates, issues and challenges facing the contemporary world. These will be designed to broaden your intellectual horizons and set you up to apply your learning to society’s major questions. Elective pathways may include: • Building Sustainable Futures • Shaping the Digital World • Global Health Challenges • Social Inclusion and Exclusion • Enterprise and Innovation • Languages and Intercultural Exchange Some students will choose to take their ‘electives’ from a range of categories. These pathways provide the opportunity for you to graduate with a defined specialism in an area of knowledge, debate or skill.
