Veterinary Medicine and Surgery*

Why study this course?
The world of veterinary medicine is changing as the industry demands that
the vets of tomorrow graduate with not only first rate clinical skills, but a
broader set of capabilities.
By studying at the Harper and Keele Veterinary School you’ll not only
benefit from Keele’s long history in life sciences and medicine, but
you’ll also gain from the expertise of Harper Adams University, with its
strong pedigree in animal sciences, veterinary nursing and veterinary
physiotherapy.
The core requirements of the course are prescribed by the Royal College
of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). The programme follows an integrated
curriculum which is delivered on both the Harper Adams University site
and the Keele University site. Students will be based at a home institution
where the majority of their study will take place, with travel to the other
university to take advantage of the excellent and complementary facilities
on both sites. The final year will predominantly consist of clinical rotations
with certain days held on each site for tutorials and follow-up work. Please
see the website for further details of programme format and delivery.
What will this mean for my future?
Accreditation will be sought from the RCVS, enabling graduates to
register and practise as vets upon the award of their degree. We are
liaising with the RCVS to ensure that the curriculum meets their criteria
for approval. The RCVS process takes a number of years and is not
completed until the first cohort of students complete their degree at
which point the RCVS undertake a formal inspection. This is in line with
the arrangements for any new veterinary degree programme in the UK.
The course at Harper and Keele Veterinary School aims to produce
graduates capable of working across the range of veterinary specialism
and workplaces.
