234 | Nursing and Midwifery
You will experience a fantastic start to
your career with a degree in midwifery,
any of the four nursing fields; adult,
children’s, learning disability and
mental health or other professions
within Health and Wellbeing sectors.
By completing our course, you could go on to
make a difference to peoples’ experiences of
care at all stages of life in a range of clinical,
managerial, educational or research settings.
As a midwife you could work in community
based and acute hospital settings or a
midwife-led birth centre caring for women
who have a normal pregnancy and birth,
and in acute settings for those whose
pregnancies are more complex. As a nurse
you might work in an acute hospital or a local
community setting or within the independent
sector, e.g. hospice, prison or care home in a
wide variety of clinical roles.
Currently the professional body (Nursing
and Midwifery Council) is reviewing all
the education standards and programme
specific standards for nursing and midwifery
nationally. In light of the review of standards
by the NMC in 2018 there will be changes
to programmes which will affect students
studying on the programme from 2019 and
beyond. These changes are not known at the
time of writing this prospectus but we will
communicate them to you as soon as they
are confirmed. To ensure each student
is fully informed and aware, all changes will
be discussed with the student community as
the changes are planned and implemented.
It is proposed that nursing specific standards
will be operational from September 2019
and the midwifery specific standards will
be operational from September 2020. All
programme will be approved by the NMC
and the University to ensure they meet the
changes that the NMC have published. This is
a very exciting time for nursing and midwifery
as it will allow nurses and midwives to meet
contemporary standards for future practice.
The School of Nursing and Midwifery is also
home to its newly launched BSc (Hons) in
Health and Wellbeing developed to provide
you with an understanding of health and
wellbeing in its broadest sense and to
answer questions that are raised every day
in the media and in our own experiences.
On completion, this course will enable you
to enter in to a role that supports a range of
organisations, and you will have the potential
to be highly regarded and sought after by a
range of employers looking to improve health
and wellbeing.
