This combined degree programme offers the opportunity to study these two distinctive disciplines, benefiting from the synergies between these two ‘high cognition’ subjects. Fluency with mathematical structures and logic will help your understanding of musical form, while music making and composition will let you apply creatively your mathematical mind. In year one in Mathematics you will study core material in calculus and algebra while in subsequent years you can begin to tailor your programme according to your own strengths or interests. In an intellectually stimulating environment, amongst world-leading researchers, you can specialise in pure or applied mathematics, or explore probability and modelling. Music at Keele is a hub of world-class musicologists, composers, performers and music technologists, including specialists in film and TV music, contemporary classical music and world music. You will have opportunities to perform with orchestras, choirs, ensembles and to create your own collectives. Mathematics graduates pursue a wide variety of careers, including; accountancy, actuarial training, aircraft engine design, web analytics, NHS project manager, operational research, software developer, scientific research, and medical statistics. Graduates in Music follow careers in media production, finance and banking, law, publishing, broadcast marketing and consultancy. You could go on to work as a teacher, performer, composer, music therapist, community musician, or sound technician, or in games design, film, radio and television. You may also choose to pursue postgraduate study at Master's or doctoral level.
