English Literature and Music
BA (Hons)
Why study this course?
English Literature and Music offers you the opportunity to pursue two
complementary subjects in one degree. Students will develop skills in each
discipline, learning to evaluate the ways that literary texts are produced, explore
the creation of music and its performance and study the cultural impact of both.
In English Literature you will explore the significance of texts within
their originating cultures, periods and genres as well as their continuing
influence. You might consider the historical, socio-political, economic,
gender and geographical contexts of fiction, poetry, drama and even
film, from the medieval period to the present day. You will have the
opportunity, if you wish, to develop your skills as a creative writer.
In Music you can focus on the creation and performance of music,
examine its meaning and uses in a diversity of styles, periods and traditions.
You will cover topics including history, aesthetics, and film music. You
will have the opportunity to develop portfolios of compositions and to
access 24/7 the music practice rooms and studios. You can also take a
work placement module studying music in the community.
What will this mean for my future?
An English Literature and Music degree will enable you to develop a wide
range of skills that can be used in many different careers. Some careers
may require further study or training, but you might work as a teacher,
journalist, editor, librarian, advertising copywriter, or arts administrator.
You could work in orchestras, bands, a recording company, publishing,
game design, film, radio and television. Our graduates also go into
careers in marketing, research, broadcasting, and publishing. Many
of our graduates choose to pursue further academic study. If you are
thinking of travelling the world after graduation, Keele’s Language
Centre (keele.ac.uk/study/languagecentre) offers a variety of language
courses.
