English Literature
BA (Hons)
Why study this course?
Studying English Literature at Keele offers you the opportunity to develop your
imaginative and critical skills. You will encounter exciting new ways of engaging
with literature in English from the medieval period to the modern day.
At Keele, you’ll explore the significance of texts within their originating
cultures and historical periods and explore a range of approaches to
literary study. You’ll consider the historical, socio-political, economic,
gender and geographical contexts of fiction, poetry and drama from the
medieval period to the present day.
You might explore the American literary tradition, links between literature
and film, or engage with exciting new genres such as the graphic novel.
You’ll become an imaginative and critical thinker as you explore subjects
such as the importance of story, the novel, writing for the screen, post-
colonialism, depictions of maternity and scandal.
What will this mean for my future?
Study English Literature at Keele and you’ll graduate with a wide
range of skills – in research, oral and written communication, and
presentation – as well as excellent opportunities for the future. Some
careers may require further study or training, but you might work as
a teacher, journalist, editor, librarian, advertising copywriter, solicitor,
arts administrator or writer. You could go into marketing, research,
broadcasting, publishing, the compiling of dictionaries, or teaching
English as a foreign language.
If you are thinking of travelling the world after graduation, teaching or
working abroad, Keele’s Language Centre offers a variety of language
courses. You may graduate with an enhanced degree with foreign
language competency or an internationally recognised qualification in
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). For further
