Biology and Education
BSc (Hons)
Why study this course?
If you are fascinated by the way organisms work and what makes them
tick, and have a passion for teaching, then this course is for you. Biology
and Education is an ideal combined degree for people interested in the
amazing world of organisms and education.
The course will introduce you to major perspectives from which
education may be studied and you will explore their links to biology.
You will explore present and future developments in education and
professional practice, against the wider background of social, cultural
and economic change.
You will take a broad approach to biology and examine biodiversity and
its evolution from the geological past. You will also explore the behaviour
and physiology of whole organisms. In your final year, you will either have
an option to do a dissertation in Education or carry out a research project
under the expert guidance of an academic staff member from Biology.
You will benefit from a supportive environment as well as fantastic
laboratory facilities and equipment.
What will this mean for my future?
When you graduate, you might choose to do a PGCE and become a
teacher. You will possess highly developed subject-specific and critical
thinking skills that are prized for careers in schools. The course also
opens up a range of opportunities outside schools as you will acquire
a range of transferable employability skills of relevance to laboratory
and industry careers. Keele’s Language Centre also offers a variety of
language courses that may enable you to graduate with an enhanced
degree with foreign language competency or an internationally
recognised qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL).
Biology graduates combining with Education have also pursued diverse
careers including scientific writing, industry work, genetics research,
medical statistics, management and sales. Several graduates have gone
into Medicine. This combination has also provided excellent preparation
for postgraduate study.
