Computer Science
BSc (Hons)
Why study this course?
We offer a first-rate environment with dedicated computing labs open 24/7,
a Gaming Lab and a MakerSpace. You’ll study industry and research-informed
modules designed by leading academics and benefit from strong business links,
dedicated career support, and high-quality teaching on our BCS-accredited
programme.
Computer Science touches every aspect of society from the home to
business, government and beyond. In a mixture of interactive lectures and
lab-based sessions, you’ll learn to use technology creatively to explore
the world, build exciting applications, and solve a wide range of problems.
The Computer Science programme introduces the subject from first
principles: previous experience isn't necessary. The fundamentals are
covered in the first semester, and the rest of the course provides the
detailed knowledge necessary for a career in computing (for example,
web development, database systems, and software engineering) and a
variety of industry and research-informed optional topics to feed your
curiosity, including computational intelligence, games development,
and computing education. In addition, the final year dissertation is
an opportunity to explore your subject in depth, and is an excellent
showcase for your advanced skills.
What will this mean for my future?
Our Computer Science Single Honours degree builds the essential skills
which are in demand from employers looking for systems analysts,
programmers, web/app developers, interface designers, data scientists,
software engineers and consultants. You’ll graduate with a wide range
of computing and employability skills, plus a highly developed approach
to problem solving. Many of our graduates move into employment that
is directly computing-related, and a substantial number go on to study
for higher degrees. 95% of Keele Computer Science graduates go on
to work or study six months after graduating (Unistats, 2017). Recent
graduates have gone to work for companies as diverse as Apple, BAE
Systems, Barclays, BBC (iPlayer), Bentley, McLaren (F1), Capgemini, EA
Games, Experian, Microsoft and the Ministry of Defence.
