Medicinal Chemistry (Combined Honours)
BSc (Hons)
Why study this course?
Medicinal Chemistry is a great subject to undertake a combined honours degree
particularly with other subjects in the life sciences. There are many opportunities
for novel science at the boundaries of disciplines, for example in the area of
medical imaging where a knowledge of chemical imaging agents combines well
with an understanding of the physics of detecting light and radiation.
The goal of medicinal chemistry is to facilitate the search for new drugs
to treat conditions such as heart disease and cancer. You’ll work in
well-equipped laboratories and learn to conduct effective independent
research. In the Medicinal Chemistry half of the course you’ll develop
deep understanding of the complex chemical and biological processes
involved in the design and manufacture of drugs and other therapies
for treating disease. This course prepared you to help solve problems
at the intersection of chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and
pharmacology. At the same time you will be studying your other subject
so the same depth and rigor.
In your third year you can continue studying both your combined honours
subjects or choose to specialise in one. Please see page 106 for
combined honours courses available.
The Medicinal Chemistry courses at Keele consistently attract excellent
student and external examiner feedback and is praised for its innovative
curriculum and its high quality teaching.
