Conflict & Peace in Science Fiction
This course introduces students to the genre of science fiction literature and its unique ability to examine social , ethical , and cultural issues by placing them outside reality . Students will explore a variety of science fiction works , both literary and film , focusing on issues of nonviolence . The speculative nature of the genre allows writers to depict how alternate or future histories deal with issues of violence , conflict , and peace . Can these works offer audiences a new vision of how we might approach these same issues on our home planet ? This is one of the questions we will explore in this course . This course focuses on non-violence , which is one of the five critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy : Earth , non-violence , women , racism , and immigration . This course meets the University ' s definition of writing intensive .
