Program Description : The Biology program at Gwynedd Mercy University is an integrated course of study with a strong emphasis on molecular and cellular biology , genetics , and biochemistry . GMercyU ’ s biology students gain a broad foundation in the physical sciences , with required coursework in chemistry , physics , and mathematics . Students who graduate from the program automatically earn a minor in chemistry with their degree . The program provides training in modern laboratory skills , utilizing current technology that is applicable to research in a graduate program and in demand by biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies . All students in the biology program must complete a research experience , providing practical , hands-on experiential training that is critical for future employment or graduate study .
Graduates from the biology program possess the knowledge and skills to succeed in graduate or professional ( medical , dental , veterinary , physician assistant , physical therapy , etc .) school or in employment in a variety of fields , and our students are employed or in a graduate program , within a year of graduation . The biology program offers the opportunity for eligible students to apply for Early Entry to the Master in Public Health program . Students who are approved may take up to 12 credits of coursework from the MPH degree program , which will count as undergraduate open electives and may also be used towards the MPH degree .
Program Student Learning Outcomes : PLO1 Communicate scientific information in a variety of formats to audiences of varying scientific sophistication in an appropriate scientific style . PLO2 Recognize , articulate , analyze , and synthesize the fundamental principles of molecular , cellular , and organismal biology , including genetics , biochemistry , ecology , etc ., and relate to them the foundational principles of chemistry , physics , and mathematics . PLO3 Plan and implement a strategy to answer a scientific question ; Demonstrate the ability to collect data using appropriate laboratory and field techniques , instrumentation , and methodology and to retrieve data from the scientific literature and from on-line databases ; Demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret data to produce meaningful conclusions . PLO4 Apply ethical judgment in the review of experimental design , implementation , presentation , and collaboration as well as in the application of scientific technologies and to recognize ethical conflicts when they occur .
