Capitalism & Socialism in Modern Britian |
This course examines the tension in the search for economic freedom and for economic justice in the modern era through the complex rivalry between capitalism and socialism . It focuses on Great Britain , where capitalism became formalized in Adam Smith ' s Wealth of Nations and where various efforts to create socialist societies have been made . As a signature seminar course , it addresses the broader value of social justice , engaging the specific critical concern of immigration ( opportunity v . exploitation ). This course requires travel to Great Britain during the first week of January 2019 , with scheduled visits to sites related to Adam Smith in Edinburgh ; Robert Owen ' s utopian community at New Lanark , near Glasgow ; the Mercy Heritage Centre in Bermondsey , London ; and Karl Marx ' s grave in London . |
