3 . If the student has not been able to resolve the matter by communicating with the instructor , the student may present , in writing , via email to the instructor ’ s GMercyU email address from the student ’ s GMercyU email address an appeal within fourteen ( 14 ) calendar days of the grade report being mailed / posted on the web . This written appeal should include the specific reasons for the appeal , with supporting documentation , as well as information about any attempts the student made to speak with the instructor prior to filing the appeal .
4 . In response , the Instructor submits a written decision explaining their rationale for either granting or denying the appeal , which at all times should be based on whether the student ’ s work warranted the grade the student seeks , within seven ( 7 ) calendar days .
5 . If the instructor has not rendered their decision within the allotted time period , or if the student is dissatisfied with the explanation that has been provided by the instructor , the student may appeal , in writing , via email , to the Assistant Dean within three ( 3 ) calendar days . The appeal must be a formal , written request to the Assistant Dean . The appeal letter should include dates and summaries of all other meetings or attempted meetings . The summary should also include names of all parties including faculty , and the reason for the initial appeal of a grade . All supporting documentation must be included with the appeal letter , the summary of the meetings , and the chronology of dates .
6 . In response , the Assistant Dean submits a written decision explaining their rationale for either granting or denying the appeal , which at all times should be based on whether the student ’ s work warranted the grade the student seeks . The Assistant Dean ’ s written decision to the student is due within seven ( 7 ) calendar days after receiving the written appeal and supporting documents .
7 . In the event that the student does not feel there has been any resolution to the student ’ s perception that the final grade was not warranted , the student may appeal , in writing , to the Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs within seven ( 7 ) calendar days after receipt of the Assistant Dean ’ s decision . The written appeal must include all previous appeals and decision notifications , and any new supporting documents .
8 . The Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs may exercise the option to select a panel of three independent faculty members who will work with the Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs to hear the student ’ s case and assist the Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs in development of resolution . The Instructor will have an opportunity to present to the Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs a verbal analysis of the facts of the case accompanied by relevant documentation .
9 . The Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs ’ decision is due in writing to the student within fourteen ( 14 ) calendar days . If it is found that the final grade given was warranted , the case shall be dismissed . If it is found that the student met their burden to prove that the final grade was not warranted , the Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs will award the final grade that is warranted by the student ’ s work or devise a process to determine the final grade .
13 . The decision rendered in the letter from the Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs is final and may not be appealed .
Grade Reports
Grade reports are available using the University ’ s Self-Service online features at the end of each semester / session . If a student believes that an incorrect grade has been reported for a particular course the student must follow the Grade Appeal process in the Catalog .
This average is determined by dividing the total number of quality points by the number of credit hours attempted . Credit hours for all grades earned at Gwynedd Mercy University are included in the calculation .
