Academic Progress , Probation , and Program Dismissal
Academic Progress Occupational Science students have three GPA requirements while in the program . The pre- professional phase of this major is the first 3 years , or first 88 required credits of the program and students are required to maintain an overall GPA of 3.1 over this period . During this time , the students need to maintain a GPA of 3.1 or greater for prerequisite courses of General Psychology , Abnormal Psychology / Psychopathology , Developmental Psychology , Sociology , Anatomy and Physiology I and II with lab , and Statistics . Both GPA requirements must be met prior to initiating the professional phase of this program . Students are required to earn a “ C ” or better in all major courses ( course codes of HS and OSC 100-300 level courses ). Earning less than a " C " will require the course to be retaken with a " B " or better earned on the retake .
The professional phase of the program is the final senior year of the major or 38 credits and students are required to maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 over this period . Additional professional phase requirements include having completed and documented 20 or more hours of occupational therapy observation beginning in the fall of their First Year to the spring of their junior year / completed an approved online shadowing experience and attesting to meeting the Technical Functions of Occupational Therapy Practice with or without reasonable accommodations ( see below ).
Probation Students in the professional phase of the program whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 will be placed on academic probation . The calculation of the cumulative GPA will begin with the first summer semester of professional coursework in the summer following the students ’ junior year . Note : the students ’ GPA prior to this summer term of the senior year is not calculated into this professional phase GPA . For example , if a student entering the professional phase of the Occupational Science program had a GPA of
3.3 and then earned a GPA of 2.8 in the first summer term of the professional phase of the Occupational Science Program , their professional phase GPA would be 2.8 , placing them on academic probation .
Occupational Science students are eligible to re-take up to 2 courses in the Occupational Science curriculum that are not an OSC 400 level course . If a student earns less than a “ C ” in one OSC 400 level course , they will be placed on academic probation , and they cannot progress to the next academic term in the professional phase of the Occupational Science program until this course is retaken the following year and an earned grade of “ B ” or better is achieved . If a student earns less than a “ C ” in two or more courses in an academic term during the professional phase of the program , the student will be ineligible to continue into the occupational therapy program as a graduate student . Academic probation from the Occupational Science program can continue into the Occupational Therapy program as a graduate student .
Program Dismissal To be removed from academic probation , the student must raise their cumulative grade point average to 3.0 or greater . Students placed on academic probation shall be given up to two successive semesters in which to raise their cumulative GPA to 3.0 or better . Failure to raise the cumulative GPA to 3.0 or greater will result in a dismissal from the Occupational Science program . Students can elect to change their major
