SEM-118 Psychology of Nonviolence 3
This course presents the issues of interpersonal ( domestic / sexual ) and intrapersonal ( suicidality ) violence through a psychological lens with special focus on strategies for the promotion of nonviolence and social justice through advocacy . As a Community Based and Engaged Learning ( CBEL ) course , students will study related topics through academic research and engage in a minimum of 12 meaningful hours of training and project planning with Community Partners during the semester ( typically during class hours ). Student teams will plan and implement service / advocacy projects which deepen their understanding of the topics addressed and which benefit the Community Partner and affected populations . Community Partners may consist of on-campus entities ( i . e ., Title IX Office , Counseling Services ) and / or off-campus community-based agencies . This course focuses on Nonviolence as a Critical Concern of the Sisters of Mercy . Due to the sensitive nature of the material presented , this course is recommended for students in their second year and above . This course meets the University ’ s definition of writing intensive .

SEM-120 The Power of Story 3
This course focuses on stories as the lens through which we understand ourselves and others . Through exploring a wide range of stories as well as examining their personal narratives , students will learn the power of story in shaping the human experience . Emphasis will be placed on identifying and challenging our narrative lens and exploring how story can be used to provide a voice for historically oppressed , marginalized , or disenfranchised people . This course focuses on racism , one of the five critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy : earth , nonviolence , women , racism , and immigration . This course meets the University ' s definition of writing intensive .
