have received a grade of C or better . C- is not an acceptable grade for transfer . Students accepted into the BSW program with less than a 2.5 GPA will have one semester to rise to a 2.5 GPA .
Students who are graduates of associate degree programs in human services or social work from colleges or universities with articulation agreements with the BSW program will be admitted as per the agreement . Prior to admission , they will have their transcripts assessed and will be asked to submit a selfassessment paper , a strong letter of support from their academic advisor , and submit a writing sample from one of their courses . As with all transfer students , 50 overall credits and half of their major courses must be successfully completed at Gwynedd Mercy University .
All social work course credits must be earned in courses at regionally accredited colleges and universities . No social work credit is given for life experience or previous work experience . This policy will appear in university catalogues and social work admission material , as well as the student handbook that all students will be given at the time of declaring the major . It will be repeated in social work orientation programs at the university .
Academic Standards / Grade Requirements : Students in the BSW major must maintain a 2.5 or better grade point average to remain in the program . Students who fall below the minimum GPA will be placed on probation and allowed one semester to rise to the minimum GPA . If the student us unable to do so in one semester , they will be dismissed from the program at the discretion of the Program Director and Director of Field Education , and Dean
Attendance Policies ( including Lab / Clinical Attendance Policies ): Each professor will have their own class attendance policy in the syllabus . However , regular class attendance is essential to learning the skills and competencies necessary for social work practice . It is also important that you arrive on time . If you have to miss a class , it is courteous to let your professor know ahead of time , much like you would let your employer know that you will be missing work . Arriving late regularly can affect your learning and your grade . You are in a professional degree program and professional behavior is expected .
Academic Progress , ( Probation ), and Program Dismissal : Occasionally , it may become necessary to dismiss a student from the BSW for academic or professional performance reasons . Students are notified of these policies in the BSW handbook , BSW student orientation , and in advising sessions .
Students who receive below a C in any social work course are allowed to repeat the course once to obtain a C or better . If the student is not able to earn a C or better in the repeated class , they are dismissed from the program . Any student who receives below a C in three courses in the major is dismissed from the program . The student will receive a letter from the program director notifying them that they have been terminated from enrollment in the social work program and directing them to the professional advisors in the Academic Resource Center to discuss other majors within the university .
Students whose overall GPA drops below 2.5 will receive a letter from the program director notifying them that they have one semester to obtain the necessary 2.5 GPA to remain in the social work program . Should the student not be able to increase their overall GPA to a 2.5 , the student will receive a letter of termination from the BSW program from the program director and directed to the professional advisors to discuss other majors within the university available to them .
Discontinuance from the Program for Non-Academic Reasons-- Professional dismissal from the BSW program : A student accepted into the social work department is expected to conform to all standards established by the Program and the University . Failure to meet the standards listed below may result in dismissal from the program for professional reasons :
