Academic Criteria for Admission , Progression , and Retention
There are three modes of entry into the Occupational Science program totaling no more than 20 undergraduate students per cohort per year .
Traditional Freshmen Admission Up to 15 students will be eligible for entry as first- year students . High school seniors should achieve a 3.1 high school GPA on a 4-point scale , 1080 combined Math & Reading SAT with a Math score of at least 500 , or at least a 22 on ACT with no subsection under 20 . ( Applicants who choose not to submit SAT and ACT test scores must provide one letter of recommendation from a high school science teacher and schedule an inperson or virtual admissions interview with the Admissions team .)
Internal Transfers A select number of undergraduate students at GMercyU can apply to change their major to the Occupational Science . Current GMercyU students who would like to apply for a change of major to Occupational Science , need to complete a change of major application and email it Dr . Thomas Mernar , Program Director of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Programs at mernar . t @ gmercyu . edu between April 1st and May 1st . To be eligible for a change of major to Occupational Science , students must have completed 24 or more credits at Gwynedd Mercy University by the end of the spring semester , maintained a cumulative GPA of a 3.1 or greater , submitted the change of major application to Dr . Thomas Mernar between April 1 and May 1 , and completed an in-person interview with a Departmental faculty member in May / June . Having earned an overall GPA of 3.1 or greater does not guarantee acceptance of a change of major to Occupational Science .
External Transfers Pending availability , a limited number of students from other academic institutions may be eligible to transfer directly into the Occupational Science major if the if they have completed 24 or more credits , maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or greater , completed an application that includes a written essay , and completed an in-person interview with a Departmental faculty member . No more than 35 credits can be transferred into the general education and prerequisite requirements required of an Occupational Science major . CLEP , IB , or AP credits are not accepted as fulfillment of any prerequisite course .
Academic Progress , Probation , and Program Dismissal
Academic Progress Occupational Science students have three GPA requirements while in the program . The pre-professional phase of this major is the first 3 years , or first 88 required credits of the program and students are required to maintain an overall GPA of 3.1 over this period . During this time , the students need to also maintain a GPA of 3.1 or greater for prerequisite courses of General Psychology , Abnormal Psychology , Developmental Psychology , Sociology , Anatomy and Physiology I and II with lab , and Statistics . Both GPA requirements must be met prior to initiating the professional phase of this program . The professional phase of the program is the final senior year of the major or 36 credits and students are required to maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 over this period . Additional professional phase requirements include having completed and documented 50 or more hours of occupational therapy observation beginning in the fall of their First-Year to the spring of their junior year / completed an approved online shadowing experience and attesting to meeting the Technical Functions of Occupational Therapy Practice ( see below ).
