teddy bear is central and directly facing the camera , suggesting that it is of significance and important to Rosaleen as well as introducing an object that is associated with comfort and childhood . Darkness surrounds the teddy bear as well as the assortment of other objects which creates mystery surrounding the bear and tension ; this tension arises from not knowing what the cause of the shadows are that the natural lighting creates and what is hidden . Tension created by the lighting is indicative of the anxiety which surrounds the unknown future of growing up as the teddy bear is the only item that is clearly lit ; thus , the darkness represents the fear of what happens when Rosaleen gets older . Using a medium close-up shot in this scene reinforces the tension of the audience not knowing the surroundings , as it removes the chance to instinctively look for what may be hidden . In Figure Four , the shot of the teddy bear is mirrored with a closeup shot that increases the significance of the object and creates the illusion that the teddy bear is somewhat different , and Alice becomes scared by the teddy bear in the ‘ unfamiliar ’ setting . Due to the doubling of the shot , there becomes an unsettling atmosphere , as the teddy bear that brings comfort and symbolises childhood takes on the illusion of being dangerous and representing the unknown . The transformation from a childlike item to one of terror as well as the physical size of the teddy bear increasing , suggests that Rosaleen fears not having those things that comfort her , specifically , being anxious about growing up .
The doubling explored in The Company of Wolves is also present in The Matrix , evident in the scene in which Neo observes the same cat twice . The cat walking past twice is a literal illusion that serves to demonstrate that reality is being changed , as Trinity explains to Neo , “ A déjà vu is usually a glitch in the matrix . It happens when they change something .” 69 Through the use of doubling , when the cat walks past again , the cat is then made unfamiliar , inviting the characters and the audience to become anxious about the ‘ true ’ reality of the scenario . Whilst Trinity is explaining the glitch to Neo , the camera constantly alternates between high-angle shots of Neo ’ s character and low-angle shots when Trinity is on screen . Differing angles represent the power dynamics between the two , with Trinity being higher up because of the camera placement , the shot suggests that she has more power than Neo , and the high-angle shots suggest that Neo possesses less power than Trinity . However , the power dynamics suggested by the camera angles are in line with the illusion and reality aspect of the film , as Trinity ’ s power , although evident , is an illusion , as the reality reveals that Neo is “ the one ”, therefore , being more powerful than Trinity . Thus , the doubling of the cat in this scene , creates a
