patchbay enables the connection of the outputs of any of the synthesisers, file
players and processes to ten independent spatialisers. The granulator
features six additional spatialisers and the file players can be routed directly
to the audio outputs, which is useful in the case of
multichannel files that
are already distributed in space.
3.2. Genetic Algorithm
3.2.1. Mapping
The generation of sonic material of sufficient complexity and variety for use in
electroacoustic music is achieved through the evolution of time varying breakpoint
functions. It is possible to map up 24 time-varying breakpoint functions onto 24
continuous parameters via a matrix. The matrix allows for one-to-one and one-tomany mappings (Figure 3). Also, due to the breakpoint functions being evolved
independently from the processing parameters, it is a relatively simple matter to
insert an alternative synthesis or processing module. A further benefit of this
approach is the range of options it provides while composing. The same breakpoint
functions can be remapped onto different parameters. For example, a breakpoint
function mapped onto grain transposition could be remapped onto the factor
parameter of the pitch shifter. While creating a different effect, the pitch trajectory will
remain and should be identifiable.
