I considered the term ‘ child pornography ’, along with the adoption of the term CSAM both nationally and internationally . I accepted CSAM as the preferred term with the proviso that it refers specifically to the creation of sexual images of children where a power imbalance is exploited . I further suggested that this definition of CSAM could be adopted in legal and policy discussions to prevent the unnecessary inclusion of consensual youth sexual image sharing .
Managing the meanings of these terms in my research will be challenging . I hope that by using the most precise terms to begin the discussion and then asking the young participants to share their preferred terminology , we will be able to navigate the power each term holds . This may then enable me to explore the different legal , semantic and semiotic meanings the young people associate with the terms .
