very strategic plan undertaken by the University of
Virginia during the past 15 years has recognized that the
University’s place as a preeminent public institution rests
in part on sustained excellence in science and engineering.
As dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science,
James H. Aylor has been instrumental in ensuring that the
University realizes this standard. During his decade as dean,
Aylor has grown enrollment and added faculty, increased
research revenue, built new facilities and fostered a series
of innovative partnerships with industry and government.
After a decade of accomplishment, he will step down when
his second term ends in August 2015.

“Jim Aylor’s dedication to the Engineering School has
been remarkable,” President Teresa A. Sullivan says. “He
has been a powerful advocate for science and technology
because he understands that excellence in these areas is
critical to the University’s future.”
