When I first learned that slavery still exists today , my heart simply broke . I began to hear stories of modern-day slavery , but then I was able to see it first hand when I traveled to India and met the Dalits . The Dalits are also called “ untouchables ” because they are “ out of the caste ” system , below the lowest caste in India . Simply due to their caste , Dalits are at a disadvantage and unable to access the same opportunities as other Indians . Those who are more powerful often take advantage of the Dalits lot , and as a result they are at a very high risk of becoming victims of modern-day slavery . I had the opportunity to meet some of these victims and listen to their heart-breaking stories . This all leads to what is now my passion : preventing modern-day slavery in all forms . I believe that each of us have many opportunities , large and small , to prevent this horrendous crime against humanity .
For me , one of the ways I live out my passion is to be involved with Michigan Abolitionist Project ( MAP ). I am so thankful to have the opportunity to be involved with an organization that is such a powerful vessel of prevention .
