Marieka Meulensteen
Marieka is the youngest designer in this graduating
class. She relies heavily on the constant love and support
of her family. Though her struggles are far from unique,
she is proud of herself for working through her
challenges. At the beginning of the program her sewing
was basic, and now she has completed a 5-piece
collection from beginning to end. Marieka wants to
pursue a career in costume design.
Raabta: A Hindi word with no direct translation to
English,
meaning
an
unexplainable
connection
to another soul. Marieka’s inspiration comes from
the Indian culture with use of traditional fabrics in
westernized styles. She created the prints for two of her
pieces with digital printing. The design was inspired by
henna patterns and Indian mandalas. On her digitally
printed designs Marieka has hand beaded more than
800 beads individually.
