ULTRAVENUS ISSUE 1: GODS AND MONSTERS May. 2014 | Page 5

I am elated to finally be able to present to you the first issue of Ultravenus Magazine. What began as such a small idea two years ago has evolved into something much, much bigger than I could have hoped for, and the support and enthusiasm it has been met with has only fuelled me with the drive to go further. Ultravenus began as an exploration- both of self, and a wider, more global phenomenom. Both seemed a vast ocean of discovery, unchartered territory. What started as a university project soon presented itself to me as something that emersed and spilled over the initial framework I had given myself. I realised as I exhibited my final images that this was begging to be taken further, to evolve and grow- I had barely scratched the surface. As I explored art, theory and feminism, I was overwhelmed by how allencompassing the issues were, and how my life as a woman, and as an individual- and not to mention the lives of millions of women around the world- were affected. What was worse, was how it was so comfortably a part of my everyday life. How every thought I had ever had to question or challenge it, seemed to be my own problem- I put it down to a misguided sense of angst, and dismissed them without a second thought. It didn't occur to me that I was not the only one having these thoughts, and what's more, that I had it in me to be a part of a movement for change. A change such as fighting the patriarchy with art, words, and revolutionary thought. We are Sian, Kate and Emily. We are Ultravenus. Ultravenus explores the ever changing and evolving world of the female, from contemporary issues to artwork and creativity. We welcome you into our community, encourage discussion, submissions, and new ideas. Our mission is to tackle the problems faced in a contemporary patriarchal society, to recognise and understand the experiences that individuals face, and to provide a vessel of creativity and positivity to enable development, growth and change. Art pushes boundaries and challenges concepts. To me, there is no more perfect way to present the battle women face daily. Art and photography are mediums in which I have always found freedom, solace, and a voice. To produce something like a magazine gives myself and others the oppurtunity to communicate their message, gives contributors and readers alike the chance to emmerse themselves in the work, find something that makes them feel, and drive them to recognise our struggle, and to join our fight. Art knows no boundaries, and neither does the passion and fight for equality. There is always more to learn, always more to understand. As you immerse yourself in our magazine, allow your mind the freedome to explore the artwork, and to understand the messages that are being relayed. The artwork is many faceted, evolving, and yet with a singular view in mind. The written pieces we feature comes from the forefront of issues faced as a result of misogyny in contemporary society. We are proud to present to you the highest quality in think-tank articles, challenging the norm of wider society. We welcome feedback. We welcome any interpretation of the articles we feature- and we would love to know your thoughts. We welcome submissions. If you would like to contribute to a future issue, please get in touch at ultravenus.magazine@gmail.com We are not just for girls, nor do we focus solely on girls. Our mantra is based in feminism, but our world is ever expanding. Sian Irvine Editor
