Although the park was originally proclaimed
to protect a single species, priorities have now
changed to conserve the rich biological diversity
found in the area and it is now home to the Big 7
(with Great White Sharks and Humpback Whales
having been added to the legendary five with
the addition of the Marine Reserve).
Gorah Elephant Camp opened its doors to the
public in December 2000, making history as the
very first private concession in a National Park in
South Africa, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Gorah has actively dedicated itself to the
conservation of the Addo Elephant National Park
through strategic business partnerships and
initiatives that aim to protect the area from the
Garden Route to the National Park. The camp
is the current recipient of the South African
National Parks Business Partner of the Year
Award. It is also accredited by the Wilderness
Foundation’s Green Leaf Initiative. The lodge is
solar and gas powered, although a generator
is
