you enter another world with a surprise
at every turn. Robed priests preside in the
hidden passageways keeping watch over
precious relics, hermit monks inhabit caves
between the arches and frescoes adorn
the walls. A day-trip by foot or on mule to
visit the more remote churches is highly
recommended for guaranteed tales of
adventure off the beaten track.
There is also another Ethiopia, a
forgotten Ethiopia in the upper reaches
of the Great Rift Valley to the south. The
remote Omo Valley is home to a great
diversity of tribes who continue the
traditional subsistence way of life which
has sustained these people for millennia.
Some customs we encounter here can
be confronting for Westerners. However,
there is a rhythm and purpose to them
which prepares these people for a harsh
existence. We are thankful to be allowed
this respectful glimpse into their lives.
Each southern tribe has developed a
unique culture and language. You’ll meet
the Dorze people with their 6-metre-

high ‘beehive’ houses and the Karo tribe
with their elaborate body painting and
scarification. While browsing at a local
market we once came across some
elegantly coiffured Hama men who gladly
accepted our offered mirror so as to admire
themselves. A brief moment of shared
human vanity, and a wonderful memory.
From north to south, Ethiopia is a
wonderful adventure that has to be
experienced to be appreciated.
