CRADLE MOUNTAIN CANYONS
L
aunch yourself off waterfalls,
abseil down cliffs and shoot
through nature’s waterslides. Or
take it easy, floating along seeing
the world from a platypus’s point of view.
Canyoning is a must do for adventurous
visitors to Tasmania.
Canyoning involves putting on a wetsuit
and helmet and swimming, floating,
walking and jumping your way through
a section of river - like white water rafting
without the raft. Cradle Mountain Canyons
is the only business offering guided
canyoning tours in Tasmania.
The tours available range from easy
to action-packed. The Dove Canyon is a
full-on day out that begins with an abseil
into the canyon. From here, there are six
waterfalls to get down. Participants jump
or slide over the waterfalls, walking or

floating from one to the next.
The scenery is spectacular. Ancient
rainforest lines the tops of the cliffs,
themselves formed of 800-million-year old
pre-Cambrian quartzite.
One of the highlights of the tour is the
‘The Pit’. At this amazing place the canyon
walls close into such an extent that you can
touch them both at the same time. You take
a deep breath and plunge off a waterfall
into The Pit. Once in this eerie place there
is only one way out – and that is down The
Laundry Chute. This ten-metre-high natural
waterslide shoots you out at high speed
from a cave and into a big open pool.
The Lost World Canyon is a more relaxed
option, great for families and available to
children aged eight and up. This threehour tour is all about finding a unique way
