archaeologist and anthropologist.
Starting in Angourie (near Yamba), Day
1 takes you along tracks and beaches,
through stretches of heath and coastal
forest, over headlands and rock platforms.
Magnificent coastal views allow walkers to
spot seasonal migrating whales. Beautiful
morning tea and lunch spots make walking
a treat, and if the group times it well, the
finish allows for an ice block at the local
Brooms Head kiosk.
Day 2 begins with a magnificent
headland and long, clear views to the
south. Then long empty stretches of beach
provide perfect meditative solitude. After
morning tea at the staggeringly beautiful
Sandon estuary, a boat crossing provides
opportunity to appreciate this unique and
serene coastal estuarine system. Close
encounters with coastal raptors, rock pool
invertebrates, shorebirds, whales and
dolphins are assured during the walk.
This area is also the habitat stronghold for
the endangered coastal Emu and a wide
variety of other terrestrial fauna.
From the village of Minnie Water, walkers
set out on Day 3 through a well maintained
head-land forest track, below which are
curiously angled rock platforms. The walk
transitions into heath incredibly rich in
diverse wildflowers before emerging onto
another gorgeous empty white sand
beach. At the far end a vast tidal rock
platform can be explored before hiking
up another diverse headland formation
that provides some of the most beautiful
coastal views anywhere. At the end of
14 Ultimate Adventure Pass
this walking day, a rewarding swim in the
tranquil Wooli River re-lives the feet and
soothes the soul.
The final day starts by crossing the
Wooli River by boat. A long stretch of
jagged rocky out-crops then makes for
interesting walking and viewing, but
which can be tricky to pass in places on
higher tides. While not easy, it is well worth
experiencing this natural, remote and
rugged coastline.
Over and around numerous headlands
and beaches, walkers pass large stands of
ancient pandanus palms. Beaches become
increasingly pebbly and tracks less distinct.
Then Freshwater Walking Track appears,
leading to Pebbly Beach Camping Area,
with another perfect lunch spot before
making final push down to Red Rock River.
