ack in 1993 a guy from
Sydney called Mike Ferris
was on an Everest expedition
to commemorate the 40th
anniversary of the first ascent by Edmund
Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. He wasn’t
actually a very good climber and didn’t get
anywhere near the summit, so when the
expedition finished he bought a motorcycle
in Kathmandu and set off to explore the
Himalaya in a very different way.
He stumbled across a couple of other
bikers on the road and found himself a
short time later leading them across the
highest road in the world, in the remote
Indian region of Ladakh. When he
returned home he decided he urgently
needed to do it all again, and so operation
Ferris Wheels was born. He took a group
of paying clients with him across the
Himalaya the following year. A little later
Mike met and married Denise, who also
immediately became an excellent rider and
another tour guide for the company.

Dalmatian Delights
since expanded into World On Wheels and
now offers motorcycle tours embracing
some 20 countries across the world. They
enjoy an exceptionally high return rate
from clients, some of whom have done 7 or
8 tours or more. One guy called Perennial
Jim has done 25 tours in 13 years!
The brand of bike used varies by
destination; in Morocco or Iceland it’s a
range of BMWs, in India or Bhutan it’s the
Royal Enfield. World On Wheels provides
a fully-supported tour package; the bikes,
all fuel, all hotels, meals, a backup vehicle
to carry luggage, a riding Australian tour
leader and a local tour escort who speaks
the appropriate language.
The Himalayan Heights tour re-visits
the (official) highest road in the world,
the 5,660m Khardung La in Ladakh. It
also ventures into the troubled waters of
Kashmir , with splendid accommodation
on the faded elegance of 1940’s luxurious
houseboats moored on Dal Lake. The tour
