“ But what is clear is the extent to which the bookmakers sweated their combined machine estates for all they were worth in the years leading up to the new staking limit ”
they were worth in the years leading up to the new staking limit . In each of the years to March 2017 , 2018 and 2019 , combined machine GGY topped £ 1.8bn .
What also appears to stand out is that they were managing to squeeze this machine revenue from a decreasing UK shop estate .
As can be seen , the number of betting shops actually contracted significantly in the three years before the introduction of the £ 2 stake limit on B2s . From the peak in 2014 of 9,111 shops , the number had fallen by 8 % five years later to 8,320 . It subsequently fell another 7.7 % in the year to 2020 , meaning that since the peak , the total number of UK betting shops had fallen by 1,430 or 15.7 %.
There were always likely to be more closures to come as the Commission statistics caught up with the current state of play . But now with the pandemic , there is sure to be another swathe of shuttered shops .
In its 2020 results statement in early March , William Hill said it had completed the previously announced closure of 713 shops and as of the end of 2020 it was down to 1,414 . However ,
