betting was, at best, muted. As can
be seen, both betting turnover and
GGY fell back in line with the drop in
machine revenues.
The 9.9 % fall in turnover in the year
to March 2020 will be disappointing
and would suggest that at least some
of the business being done over
the counter at the closed shops has
disappeared from retail altogether.
Such might also be the conclusion from
the 5.2 % fall in retail GGY.
However, a big caveat here is that
the data will have been affected by the
start of lockdown measures in March.
UK horse racing was cancelled as of 18
March 2020 and British and European
football was pulled the weekend
before, on March 13. This meant that
while bookies got the benefit of one
last hurrah from the Cheltenham Festival
last year, business would have trailed off
drastically after that.
In a counterfactual world, we might
have been talking about retail betting
turnover and GGY rising between
2019 and 2020, the latter particularly
because margins for 2020 were
relatively strong. At 16.9 % compared
with 16 % for 2019, margins in 2020
