World Matchplay
If the World Championships is the biggest tournament of the
PDC calendar then the BetVictor World Matchplay certainly
comes a close second. So when the 32 players who had qualified
for the event headed to the Winter Gardens in Blackpool for
nine-days of top notch darts there can have been no doubt in
their minds as to what winning the tournament would mean.
This was perhaps even more true in the case of Phil Taylor, who was
looking to keep a run of victories in the Matchplay stretching back to
2008 going.
Taylor had been battling poor form throughout the first half of 2014,
but with some tweaks in his equipment and above all a desire to retain
his World Matchplay crown he was able to overcome the odds and claim
a record breaking seventh straight win on the Winter Gardens stage.
First Round
Taylor got his campaign off to the best possible start with a 10-4 victory
over Darren Webster which was perhaps less comfortable than the
scoreline suggested.
Webster put up an excellent display, but it was clear early on that Taylor
had recaptured his best form. The Power averaged well in excess of
100 and was able to run away with the match despite a valiant display
