An evening of Vintage Cigars
and Fine Wines at the Bulgari
By Nic Wing
There are few things better than having time to enjoy a vintage cigar and a glass of fine
wine and to enjoy such an evening in the elegant surroundings of the multi award winning
Edward Sahakian Cigar store at the Bulgari Hotel is pretty special.
The wines were selected and introduced by Joe
Muller of Wine Merchant’s Corney & Barrow
and the cigars selected and presented by Eddie
Sahakian.
The first wine was a beautifully chilled white,
a Guardiola, IGT, 2011, Tenuta di Passopisciaro
– made by Andrea Franchetti and his team.
The grapes grown high on Mount Etna and
production is imited to just 1,500 cases each year.
It matched excellently with a tiny Cuban Davidoff
Ambassadrice from December 1990.
To follow two glasses of Italian red wine; first a Le
Cupole IGT Toscana, 2010, Tenuta di Trinoro also
made by Andrea Franchetti and his team. Made
from grapes grown in the Val d’Orcia in Tuscany,
600m above sea level. The grapes are picked late
and it has a juicy and supple style.
The second red was a Biserno Tenuta di Biserno,
2010 – made by Lodovico Antinori and his team.
This hails from the Upper Maremma region of
Tuscany in wonderfully clay rich soils. Only 3,300
cases of this wine are produced each year.
The reds were paired with a beautifully aged 2001
Cohiba Lancero. I have to say that I don’t think I
have ever experienced as perfect a match of cigar
and wine as the Lancero and the Le Cupole red, it
was just sublime.
