Celebrating Sir Winston Churchill’s
birthday in style
The 30th of November is the Birthday of Sir
Winston Churchill and despite his demise
the suppliers of his Champagne, his cigars
and indeed his shirts celebrate the day with
great gusto.
And so it was that we made our way to James J Fox
in st James’s not once but twice in the last week of
November to celebrate the great man’s birthday.
At the beginning of the week the stores customers
were welcomed to the store for an evening of
cigars and celebrations at the store which, when it
was still Robert Lewis, supplied his first order of
Cuban cigars on his return from Cuba in his early
twenties.
On the 30th a small group gathered at Turnbull
and Asser in Mayfair where we were regaled by the
company’s chief designer who was resplendent
in a beautiful tweed ‘siren suit’ modelled on the
suit which Sir Winston himself had made by the
23
company and which he thought was the natural
wear for a gentleman. He had suits made by
Turnbull and Asser in the uniform material of the
army, the Navy and the Air force to wear when he
was meeting the troops. He also had, for home use
some beautiful maroon silk velour suits.
We were then educated on the great man’s
favourite tipple from the Champagne house of Pol
Roger by the company’s UK Marketing Manager
and enjoyed a beautifully chilled glass or two
of the 2004 vintage before jumping into cabs
and heading down to James J Fox in St James’s
for cigars ,Romeo y Julieta Churchills naturally,
accompanied by some excellent Hine Cognac in
the newly refurbished first floor samping lounge.
I have to say that I am certain that this was a
birthday celebration that Churchill himself would
have enjoyed and approved of.

two nights which you can see here
