T
his year our preps for the
International festival had a
saucy twist to them with the
introduction of Campus Activations. We went to all the UJ
campuses promoting the festival
clad in very colorful clown wigs
and of course the trademark
#TeamZim
and
Bornfreez
Zimbabwe tshirts. We had a
‘
guess the number of sweets in
the jar’raffle at each of the activations and a very lucky lady
from DFC won the whole jar of
candy…I mean like the whole
jar! Our most popular feature at
the
activations
was
the
Facebook photo booth and we
managed to get a number of new
friends because we would give
free sweets for liking the University of Johannesburg ZimSoc
page on Facebook (please like it
if you haven't already)…smart
idea, we know!
Then came the day we had been
waiting for, the 16TH of September. For lovers of things like
myself the day actually started
around 2AM - Munya and
Ropa’
s stands were not going to
do themselves ai! The beauty
was the Kariba dam structure
and the bondes (reed mats)
hanging inside the "walls" of
our stand.
“
We had issues with the name bonde
though, well at least I did because
bonde has a totally different meaning
where I come from”

What is Zimbabwe without dance, music
and sporting…not Zimbabwe! We had a
sports parade with the ‘
Mighty Warriors’
showing of their kit followed by the
monyas aka hunks…imika, the crowd
went wild while Tanga Wekwa Sando’
s
Ndivava Vakomana Vekwedu was
playing, ehe because iboys redu iroro!
Archie and his crew came after what
seemed like a very long wait. They
danced to a medley of popular songs and
I have to say that those girls and boys
stirred up the crowd. DJ Smiley’
s
Magetsi dance was evidently the favorite
with fellow Zimbabweans on 263connect
sending through their love for the job
well done.
