Roots and Shoots

goes to the farm

The Roots & Shoots club has been developing a new initiative this year – to outreach to our immediate community and educate each other about basic and sustainable ways we can make a positive impact on the environment.

In December, a selection of our dedicated primary and high school Roots and Shoots activists celebrated the end of a successful term by undertaking a joint field trip to Huiling Organic farm. The purpose of this trip was to learn about the environmental benefits of organic farming versus traditional farming whilst, at the same time, gaining an insight into the practical day-to- day workings of this unique local farm.

This fieldtrip allowed our students to connect knowledge acquired through in-school environmental lessons with real-life experiences. During their visit to Huiling farm, the PYP and DP students were introduced to organic farming techniques and had the opportunity to make comparisons between the organic fruits and vegetables and those foods that they see at local wet markets – learning that in terms of fruit and veg, uglier tends to mean more delicious! Following their tour around the farm, the students then worked together to create an organic pizza lunch using fresh basil and salad leaves picked with their own hands
