Towards GSMUN '14, with a corelation to the violence in Turkey

Baturay KÖSOĞLU

ot intending this scripture to be an academical or a literary one at all, I am to convey my true feelings

and notions in this article.

After having been chosen as a delegate of any country for a “Model United Nations” session does a tough period of wise preparation turn up. Indeed, this was exactly what happened to me myself after having learnt that I had been chosen as the representant of French government in

the “Human Rights Council”, for the annual conference of GSMUN.

Being, in my opinion, by far the most sophisticated event of our educational year in our school, Galatasaray University, GSMUN ’14 will truly have a great impact on several aspects. That is to say; with five major committees in total – each of which has been assigned with distinctive multicultural themes regarding global issues in a worldwide basis, I personally assume that it will be highly likely to derive conclusions of great importance; not only in global terms, but also for/against Turkey. What is more is that it will be no exaggeration to assert that the Security Council and the Human Rights Council will probably lead the way when the topics happen to come to the current issues rising and flowing in Turkey.

As concrete as it is, the supposed introduction part was not my ultimate intention. Yet, I had, in the very beginning, come up with the fact that mentioning the lines above would be beneficial to make a humble start. I believe that it is the reader who shall decide upon this. Seeing the current conflicts coming about in Turkey and dating back to the protests of “Gezi Park”, we all tend te reveal our sorrow, our despair, our utmost fear, our infite rage and our dissatisfaction towards political and social formations either by protesting, outcrying, resisting, rebelling or by being suppressed, being manipulated, being deluded, being provoked and, at times, by being humiliated.

Nowadays, I am wandering through the media as often as I have never done so far. Such lies, such betrayals and revenges in return – where worlds collide and days are dark – such lives wiped out and the path of an ultimate terror are all nothing but what made our humanity derail.

Now that the facts are all obvious with all their nudity, reasserting any political opinion or belief, indicating any sociopolitical attitude would be just fruitless. That is, it is no use to negotiate on what every single individual declares.

what every single individual declares. As for the phrase “The police is a humanbeing,

as well.”, it is a known fact that most of us count ourselves as “humanists”. Furthermore, a number of people has kept, up until now, coming out as humanists just through reading a few aphorisms by Buddha, or by analysing just a small number of sonnets by Shakespeare. This was indeed a retrospective cycle with every single one talking all at once. Namely, some would come out and praise Fetullah Gülen, with others honouring Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayip Erdoğan, with some subliming Adolf Hitler, or with ones regarding themselves as Ataturkists only by putting out a Turkish flag, for example. This formation, that insanity, has always been up there. What I say is that I have started to interrogate myself in an excruciating manner since “Gezi”, indeed it is not that I do not have difficulties doing that; astounding myself, and even selfmanipulation at times.
