UGA Housing Sustainability Initiative
University Housing strives to increase environmental awareness among students and staff as well as promote a
sustainable community through leading by example. The Green Cup Challenge is a four-week energy, water and waste
reduction competition between freshmen residence halls in the Hill community, challenging students to adopt
sustainable living practices and reduce their environmental footprint. In FY 14, Church, Hill, and Boggs communities
won the coveted Green Cup through reducing water use by 108 gallons each month and energy use by a combined 23%;
the new EcoReps program was launched; the Dawgs Ditch the Dumpster / Give & Go student move-out donation program
diverted over 30,000 pounds, or $24,000, of valuable materials to community organizations; and the Global Engagement
Freshmen Learning Community diverted 119.5 pounds of compost through a grant-funded project in Creswell Hall.
