Welcome
James Cook University is a leading Australian research and teaching institution, listed in the top 400 universities in the world based on research excellence*. International students have been coming to our campuses for many years to further their education, undertake research and gain qualifications that are recognised world-wide. JCU is Queensland’s second oldest university and was established in Townsville, Queensland in 1970 to be Australia’s “University for the Tropics”. Now, JCU has developed into a Tri-City University with major tropical campuses in Townsville and Cairns, both in northern Queensland, and in the world-class city-state of Singapore. Some JCU courses are also offered at JCU Brisbane, a campus operated by Russo Higher Education Pty Ltd in Queensland’s capital city of Brisbane. From its establishment, JCU’s mandate has been to conduct research and teaching on areas of particular relevance to the tropics, a region that is the home of nearly half the world’s people and around 80 per cent of its biodiversity. We articulate our clear and potent vision in our Strategic Intent: to work towards a brighter future for life in the tropics world-wide through graduates and discoveries that make a difference. At JCU our students are the heart of our organisation and our aim is to ignite and support your passion for learning and provide you with a truly Australian experience. As an international student at JCU you will enjoy a supportive study environment, highly qualified teachers, exceptional facilities, and a friendly atmosphere that emphasises personal contact between students and academics. Our graduates are valued by employers for their combination of academic skills, practical experience and good communication and technology skills.
