The power of words
Bibliotheraphy now available at the Student Health Centre University College Cork
Bibliotherapy is the use of books to help heal and treat a variety of emotional and medical problems.
Self-help books have been used in this way for many years and are now being recommended as a means of providing psychological therapy for people experiencing emotional and psychological difficulties for example stress, anxiety, self esteem issues, bereavement.
The first bibliotherapy scheme in Ireland was piloted in 2007. 6 years on it has developed further and the Power of Words Book Selection was carried out in 2013.
The effectiveness of bibliotherapy has been well established in clinical trials and is now something that students at University College Cork can avail of.
It may be used as a treatment alone or in addition to other treatments.

UCC Elevate
A GP exercise referral programme with peer support
UCC Elevate is for students who would benefit physically or mentally from increased physical activity but needs additional support in doing so.
It is a multifaceted initiative combining the GP referral programme and Peer Assisted Student Support. The GP referral programme is a 12 week individually tailored exercise programme available at the Mardyke Arena and provides one to one support from a personal trainer and includes an initial assessment and induction, a review at 6 weeks, a final review at 12 weeks and continuous monitoring throughout. In addition students will be matched with a peer supporter who will act as an additional support in completing the programme and provide support in sustaining positive change.
