CHANGING COURSE
In fall 2023 , the Academic Senate approved the Jane Teranes Climate Change Education Requirement , the first of its kind in the UC system . This graduation requirement will start with the first-year student cohort entering fall 2024 and will require candidates for a bachelor ’ s degree to complete an approved one-quarter course .
The new requirement is “ designed to empower our students with the knowledge and skills needed to confront the urgent global challenge of climate change ,” according to a statement released by the office of the Executive Vice Chancellor Elizabeth H . Simmons .
Approved courses are drawn from a range of disciplines to provide students with the opportunity to consider the complex nature of climate change .
