"Unmanned Air Vehicle, a valuable asset for the community:
industrial challenges and opportunity"
It is a well-known fact that Unmanned Air Vehicles today are considered valuable assets by and for
communities around the world. Thanks to their key-capabilities in a wide spectrum of applications (in
the military, security and civil/commercial sectors), UAVs demonstrated their ability to support the
community with very high added value services that also offer significant future opportunities for
stakeholders. ASD, the association of European Aerospace manufacturers, has always been strongly
engaged in promoting these technologies, and supported the European institutions, agencies and
partnerships in their efforts to identify, launch and implement all the necessary enabling actions aimed
at making unmanned aerial technology a key contributor to the EU's economy, security, and aviation
policy.
Manufacturers believe that there has been a good progress with the measures launched until now, but
the routine use of UAVs in the non-segregated airspace (which enables the full capabilities and benefits
of UAVs) today remains a prospect for which more effort and commitment are needed from policy-
makers. The presentation will summarize the envisaged main benefits of UAV in terms of possible
applications and key-success factors, a status on where Europe stands currently, and the areas
(technologies and regulations) where ASD believe that important improvements are needed in the
forthcoming years.
